Mirteto – abandoned city

On Monti Pisani where is a abandoned little village which is called Mirteto. Tha name is derived from the plant myrtle (it. mirto). These myrtles are common around Mirteto. The village’s origin is unknown, although it is mentioned in three documents: in “Annali Camaldolesi” in 1150, in a bull of Gregorio IX on May 15 1227 and in a letter adressed to Pope Alessandro IV prior in 1258.

In 1712 it belonged to Ricci family, but today is “free’ and belongs to nature and wilderness.

  2. Such a beautiful place – I have to wonder why it is in a state of ruin? Too isolated? Too inaccessible? I googled the name but was unable to glean any more information, really. Given the chance, I’d be the first with a bucket of cement and a wheelbarrow full of hope. I would simply love to live there!

    • Even me I like places isolated, but mmmm, this place is kind of very isolated 🙂 it is on the mountain and it takes time to climb in about 30 minutes and walk up in a crooked and rocky pathway, so I think is not so practical to live there 🙂 And I think that this is the reason why this place is abandoned 🙂
